Summer is well and truly here, with consistent days above 30 and venturing towards 40 on occasion. With sunshine and lack of rain, it’s not typically a time that most will think about getting their gutters cleaned. However, we’re going to look at a couple of reasons why it may be an idea to consider a summer cleanout.
Firstly, though it’s less frequent, we do get summer rain. A big downpour on full gutters will cause issues no matter what time of year it may be. If you had your gutters cleaned back in March or April, by the time December rolls around, they are likely to be somewhat full again. Particularly if you live in an area with lots of larger gumtrees. These go through periods of dropping leaves throughout the year, quickly filling your gutters and downpipes. If that’s the case, it can be advisable to consider a bi-annually gutter cleaning service, to ensure you’re not caught out over the warmer months.
Secondly, we’re deep into the bushfire season. Perhaps more applicable to rural and commercial properties, it is something that needs to be considered nonetheless. Gutters full of dry leaves are perfect fodder from flying embers and can erupt very quickly. This has caused devastation around Australia and has resulted in a number of homes being burned to the ground.

Similar to how fire-breaks are put in place to protect the outskirts of a property from fire, the outskirts of your home should be treated the same way. It doesn’t take an out of control fire to create embers and cause a fire on your property. Barbecues, fire-pits, sparklers and a number of other triggers can result in the dry matter in your gutters catching alight. That is why it is so important to keep the dry leaves from building up. Follow DFES (Department of Fire & Emergency Services) recommendations of clearing your gutters as part of fire safety protocol.
Summer brings with it scorching hot temperatures in Western Australia, which can make climbing onto your roof very uncomfortable. Either leave your summer gutter cleaning to the early morning or late afternoon. Alternatively, get in touch and let us take care of the job for you…
Cheers to a great summer ahead!
