Gutter Guard can be a controversial topic in the gutter cleaning industry. Many operators (such as us) believe that most gutters are better off left as installed and simply maintained as often as required. Gutter guard quite often simply doesn’t work as intended, failing to keep debris out of the gutter system, causing more problems than it solves.
With that said, there are some properties where regular maintenance simply doesn’t cut it and extra assistance is required. For these properties, we will recommend and install a particular type of gutter guard we have seen to prove effective.
Having seen thousands of gutters in action, the only guard we can recommend (and the only type we install) is gutter foam.
The is an angled foam inserts that practically fills your gutter, only allowing water to penetrate through and reach the downpipes. Everything else sits on top, allowing the wind and rain to wash it straight off. With that said, it may still require maintenance cleaning, though likely far less often than other mesh style gutters guards.
We’ve found the durability to be sound, with the product lasting 6+ years and the cost compared to many other alternatives is much more reasonable.
The photos below show some of the issues we have run across with standard mesh gutter guard. While it certainly works well in certain situations, it does require regular maintanance, or the below will happen. We’ve found the gutter foam tends to be easier to maintain (only requiring the top to be cleaned, rather than underneath.
The Process

If it does, we’ll measure the gutter system and provide a quote based on accessibility, height and other factors.
The installation includes a full clean out of the gutter system and flushing of downpipes, to ensure everything is flowing as it should, before the product is installed. The last thing we want is for something to germinate underneath and block everything up! Then the product is fitted correctly, ensuring no gaps for debris to escape through.
Gutter Guard Maintenance
Even with gutter guard installed, it’s simply not a set and forget solution. The gutters will still require maintenance, with the debris removed from the top of the guard at intervals, to ensure the water is able to run through correctly.
This will be the case with any gutter guard that’s installed. We have lost count of the number of properties we have gonethrough, that have a miniature jungle growing underneath their gutter guard. The previous installers hadn’t notified them that regular maintenance would still ber required!
